Australian Medical Association pushes for safe injecting trial

THE Australian Medical Association has called for the trial of a supervised injecting facility in Victoria to prevent overdoses and help control the spread of blood-borne diseases including hepatitis C. AMA Victorian president Stephen Parnis said given a successful facility had operated in Sydney for more than 10 years, it was time the Victorian government considered a trial.

The results show that treatment may affect the nerve cells in the brain. The studies follow on from previous studies where methadone was seen to affect cognitive functioning, such as learning and memory.
